MaMA Music & Convention, a major event for music industry players, will take place on October 16, 17 and 18, 2024 in Paris, in the heart of the Pigalle / Montmartre district !
This will be an opportunity for all players in the industry, both French and international, to get together for 3 days and 3 nights and discuss the new challenges facing music, discover a wide range of artists and groups, and exchange views on the outlook for the sector.
ZONE FRANCHE MEETINGS AT MaMA

After Marseille and the Francophonie Summit, and before Rabat in Morocco, the exhibition is unpacking its bags in Paris. It will be installed in the hall of the FGO-Barbara, so it can’t be missed !
Johan Lauret, exhibition coordinator and Zone Franche member with Productions Nuits d’Afrique, will be on hand to guide visitors.
2/ MaMA Great Debate : “What initiatives are being taken to improve discoverability ?“Speech by Destiny Tchéhouali, Scientific Director of La Percée — Thursday, October 17, 1:30 pm to 3 pm (Lycée Jacques Decour)
“How do you make yourself known in the creative sector ? In every sub-sector, there are issues of discoverability : how do you get your music heard on streaming platforms ? How do you get programmed at venues and festivals ? How can niche musical genres get heard ? And what are the stakes in terms of cultural diversity ? Should discoverability be regulated ?
3/ Panel discussion : “How can we promote musical diversity online and fairer remuneration models for artists?” — Friday 18 at 3:30pm — Panel Room 3 at FGO-Barbara (1 rue Fleury — 75018 Paris)
“In a world where online musical offerings abound, music listening is paradoxically concentrated on a smaller number of popular artists. This is one of the observations made by Productions Nuits d’Afrique as part of the study “Valoriser les artistes de la diversité […] à l’ère des plateformes numériques”, carried out by Destiny Tchéhouali. This observation is shared by Zone Franche, which has been warning for many years about the invisibilization of World Music in the media and, from now on, on platforms.
On the one hand, the algorithmic recommendations of listening platforms seem to comfort listeners in their musical tastes, without offering any real musical discoveries. On the other, search engines, even when users make precise queries, struggle to direct users towards niche or diversified content.
In both cases, the user’s attention is directed towards a limited number of star products or international content enjoying a certain popularity and visibility, to the detriment of a rich diversity of French-language content.
What’s more, this over-representation of certain artists and aesthetics, and the consequent invisibilization of others, raises questions about musical openness and cultural diversity, the standardization of listening habits and aesthetics, and the fair remuneration of artists.
Professionals are seizing on these issues, and this round table will discuss the La Percée project (initiated by Les Productions Nuits d’Afrique and co-produced by Zone Franche, the World Music network) and the Fair Music Project, run by the International Music Council, both of which are working to address these problems.
This exchange, which will bring together a researcher, a cultural entrepreneur, an artist representative and an international organization, will bring together a variety of perspectives on the issues of discoverability and fair trade music.

4/ Cosy Lab at the Trianon : “Why is diversity always a hard sell?” - Thursday October 17 at 3pm at the Trianon (80 Blvd Marguerite de Rochechouart)
When we talk about music, most of the time it’s rock, pop, electro and rap. But as soon as we talk about other things, it becomes directly world or ethnic music, a fringe aesthetic. How can venues deal with this and get people to be curious ? How can we talk about musical diversity and its richness without being ethnocentric ? Why is it so complicated to talk about it, to promote it and, ultimately, to sell it ?
It promises to be a passionate and exciting discussion.
With Cécile Héraudeau, director of the Convivencia festival and president of Zone Franche, on the issues of cultural and musical diversity.
5/ Conference“What are the issues for contemporary music in the face of the rise to power of the extreme right?“
organized by RIF and SMA — Friday 18 at 1pm — Lycée Jacques Decour
co-organized by FRACAMA, Féma, UFISC, Fédération des Musiques Métalliques, FAMDT, ZONE FRANCHE, FELIN, Haute Fidélité, Le RIM, AJC, Le Pôle, Supermab, FEDELIMA, Grand Bureau, FERAROCK, Technopol, Grabuge, Fédéchanson, PAM
The closure of the Sous-Marin concert hall in Vitrolles, the desire to abolish the intermittent employment scheme, the privatization of public broadcasting, pressure, censorship and threats to programming, attacks on or boycotts of certain artists, arbitrary appointments to head up cultural institutions, etc. — these are just some of the examples of the extreme right’s threat to culture. Whether in France or abroad, there’s no shortage of examples to show just how great the threat posed by the extreme right to culture is. How can the contemporary music sector face up to these threats and preserve cultural diversity and artistic freedom ?
Speakers :
#Emmanuelle Cuttitta, Co-President — FEDELIMA / Director — Le Gueulard Plus (57)
#Vincent Guillon, Co-Director — Observatoire des politiques culturelles (OPC) / Associate Professor — Sciences Po Grenoble (38)
